A FIRST Post

I’m going to change it up a little bit and talk more of something that is close to my heart: FIRST. It stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It is a very ambitious organization that has a lot of goals.

It is mostly a way of getting kids interested in engineering. What better way than a robotics competition? Different for elementary, middle and high school, but with all a similar structure. The High school and middle school teams are given a game for robots to play on and the teams have 6 weeks to build robot. This is a short amount of time even for the professional world, and I am surprised that my high school team has succeeded in building a robot every year. This forces the kids to learn how to build quickly and have a good understanding of the design process. They need to have a lot of dedications: to show up everyday and to stay on tasked to build the robot by the very short deadline. It is quite an intense rush and a little bit hard to balance with schoolwork.

They also try to teach kids good lessons. Gracious Professionalism is huge part of FIRST. It is to treat other teams with respect and help them out when they need it. It is quite different to how sports teams work. They do whatever they can to beat the other team. In FIRST, we all try to work together to do the best we can. Teams loan each other spare parts, help with code, even help building. One of the best examples is when in the finals of a competition, a robot broke down, they enemy alliance called a time out and helped out the other team fix the robot. Not something you would ever see on a football field.

FIRST sponsored by a lot of companies. NASA always want to get kids interested in engineering, but other tech firms like Booz Allen and Northrup Grumman want to help support and ‘train’ potential employees. Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama support FIRST. Even celebrities like Steven Colbert and Will.I.am are for FIRST. When you go to a competition, you feel very appreciated when you hear from CEO’s from companies talk about how great it is to have kids interested in engineering so early.

Now. to get into more of my usual blogging, I’ll talk a mini-meme in FIRST. When Will.i.am first was shown on TV he was asked how did he feel about this game. Here is his response:

I quite agree.  The games are always exciting: basketball, soccer, tube-stacking, the games are always from to watch and the energy at competitions are amazing (especially with all the dancing and conga lines).

FIRST is an amazing organization.  I will always remember what FIRST did for me and I will support my old team to help shape kids to be sharper and better people.

Facebook Memes

I’m not talking about memes about Facebook, I’m talking about memes on Facebook.

The criteria for a meme to spread on Facebook is a little different than those on other sites. There is the occasional really funny one that goes around Facebook, but the usual ones have a bit of a trend.

First of all, they’re usually an image that makes it easy to tag people in. The “tag your friends” pictures where you tag your friends to describe them. This made friends feel they were appreciated and understood (assuming they were tagged in the right spot). This was pretty popular a couple of years ago, but now the use of it has died down.

From Hug Pages

Another aspect of a meme that spreads on Facebook is that it has to do something with yourself. Whether describing how bad your life is or your views on life in a meaningful way, if it is relate-able to a lot of different people, it will spread like wildfire. The “What people think I do” meme is a very good example. It describes people’s different view points of what they believe a part of your life is about. Society thinks that being a doctor is like being on Grey’s Anatomy, while their actually is a buttload of paperwork involved. This meme can be very funny and makes you think more about certain professions and activities.

Now that you know how to make a meme trending on Facebook, remember to use it responsibly. If you only post memes on Facebook, it might ruin Facebook’s image. Instead of being a place to talk about yourself, through constant meme posting it might turn be a place to just post funny pictures, like Tumblr or Reddit. There is also the chance that people will start ignoring your posts entirely, which is probably more likely. So be very careful about posting these type of things.

Teach me How to Plank

Some find this meme annoying. Other people find it hilarious.  This spread throughout the internet like wildfire and people are amazed why it became so popular.

Planking is very simple: Lie down straight, rigid, and face first anywhere.

It is rather ridiculous. Planking is trolling in its own right because it makes a lot of people angry and confused. Why would you do this? What does it mean? Doesn’t it hurt? A lot of people join in on the fun of messing with people, others just want to join because it seems like fun. I remember planking at the center line while playing capture the flag to make fun of people just standing around guarding their sides.

This meme gives people a way to be a creative. You can plank anywhere to make some sort of statement. People plank on top of statues, in the middle of the street (I don’t recommend it), even on people planking (plankception!). The only thing that is stopping you is your own imagination!

The spin-offs of of this has also been pretty creative. A simpler one is owling, where you crouch instead of lie down. The cooler one I’ve seen is horsemaning, where you take a picture of yourself looking the headless horseman. I always wonder what they’ll think of next.

People also need to be careful while planking. Ridiculous as it seems, there have been planking accidents. People who are stupid enough to plank on the ledge of high buildings and accidentally fall.

So remember kids: planking may be fun but think of your own safety first!

XKCD (w/e that means)

XKCD is a webcomic, a series of cartoons posted on the web ,and is one of my favorites. The title is just a string of 4 words that has no meaning and isn’t an acronym for anything. The creator is Randall Monroe, a nerd, programmer, and artist. His comics consists only of stick figures as character, but that does not make him a bad artist. It just means that he spends less time on drawing detailed people and more on coming up with great ideas. Here’s a really great example:

from xckd.com

It has a mix of programming and drinking humor. Though the drawing is simple but detailed enough that you can figure out what is going on instantly. He makes a lot of mathematical and computer science jokes, but it never stops him from making political or silly jokes. He has quirks, like his fear of velociraptors, love of the show Firefly and wanting his very own a giant hamster ball. He also does incredible to-scale drawings of information and has done an extensive survey on colors.

His comics has caused some actions in the real world. People have created geohashing groups, made their houses velicoraptor proof and added functions in various programming languages based, all based on his comics.

Following his comic has given me new knowledge and new perspectives on life. I know a lot more about programming and mathematics because of him, I now laugh when anybody says “there’s gullible written on the ceiling” and I want a [citation need] sign. I am not surprised he makes a living off of this webcomic because I never get tired of his humor. It makes my Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings start off better. I hope people reading this will start enjoying his delightful comics as well.

All about the funny Kitties

This is one of the first meme I got into, and I still hold it close to my heart.

LOL-Cats is a very simple meme. You have a picture of a count in a situation and you try to make a joke out it so that you Laugh Out Loud (LOL). One of the first and most famous ones is this, the Cheezburger” cat:

From icanhascheezburger.com

The cute face looks hopeful and possibly asking for something. I think what made is funny and so popular was that he asked for a , something most people would ever expect. Most people found this cat hilarious and started sharing him everywhere. The website, icanhascheezburger.com, dedicated there entire website around this one cat and produced lots of cats similar to him, called LOL Cats. A lot of the other LOL Cats use the grammar used as the Cheezburger cat known as LOLCat speak. There is even a programming language for it (just for the lols of course).

LOL cats are a lot of the times cats in funny situations saying funny things, but some are also very cute with cats saying cute thing. It’s one of those cat fandoms (I might talk about this eventually, give me comments of whether want it or not). It has spread to lots of other animals but I think cats are still the most popular.

It is a way of relieving stress by laughing and awing at pictures of cats. When I first found LOL-cats, I spent hours looking at these pictures to help me forget about the stress of an upcoming test (not the most productive method) or just the normal worries of life. So help the world feel better by taking picture of your cat doing something cute or funny, add a caption, and post it on the web.

U MAD BRO?

Everybody has had a class clown in their class. He/she constantly makes jokes and disrupts the class with his rude behavior. Unfortunately, there are lot of people on the internet who are exactly like this: the Trolls>

Wikipedia defines a troll the best : someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional responseor of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

TL;DR: People who will say anything to make people angry. Sexism, antisemitism, even saying that the moon landing was fake. Just check the comments on a YouTube video of it. It doesn’t matter what they talk about, it is all about making the angry and start convincing them that they’re wrong.

This face describes everything about them:

It’s a look that wants to make you angry, and they’re enjoying it. They are some of the lowlife of the internet, slightly above internet pedophiles.

It is amazing how much troll life has increased over the years. Calling any video or picture “fake and gay” is the epitome of being a troll because it happens on almost every video ever made. They even started to make fake science to annoy, but also to amuse people. Though troll science is acceptable on the internet, most other types of trolling is unacceptable.

Here is a word of advice: If you respond to it, the troll wins. So please just try to ignore the trolls on the internet and do not give them a reason to continue trolling.

Warning: Text Picture Text is not an internet official term for this time of thing, but it’s what some people call it and a good name for it for me (plus there isn’t a real term for it anyway).

It is very simple: have some text the top, a picture animal or person in the middle, then more text on the bottom. The hard part is making something that’s memorable and interesting enough that people want to spread it. What usually happens is that the top text gives a situation and the bottom text is what the displayed person or animal would do or suggest to do in that situation It’s a way of expressing an idea through personification. It’s kind of hard to understand through only words, so here’s an example:

Advice dog is one of the original text picture text memes (probably, it’s hard to keep track of things on the interwebs).  Though this is not the best example of Text Picture Text, it is an excellent example of Advice Dog:

After this came a lot of different ideas for certain animals, like insanity wolf, the wolf that does completely ridiculous things, or Awkward Penguin (we have a lot in common) who does a lot of awkward things. Ones with humans were also created like College Freshman and B0romir.

It can be used to vent your feelings in ridiculous ways. I could use Socially Awkward Penguin to talk about how awkward I feel about trying to get directions, or Success Kid to portray how awesome it felt when I tried to make my classmates follow me into a long route to class but found a shortcut instead. I can also use to talk about how annoying some girls on facebook can be or how annoying some teachers can be. People even use it to advertise politicians.

So if you want a laugh or just get something out of your system go to site like memegenerator.com and either look at some of these memes or make some of theme.

What is a Meme

For those of you who don’t know what a meme is, it isn’t a silly word created by the internet. It’s definition is: a cultural item that is transmitted by repetition. While the “cultural part” is questioned by some people about internet memes, they are certainly repeated.

Memes are mostly for amuse or to move people, or to affect politics. It is a way of bringing people together. But how do memes come into affect? It’s rather simple: if  the idea is amazing, catchy, funny, or ridiculous enough, it will spread and attract people like a virus spreads through a country. It uses the internet as its medium and spreads.

I’ve witness the creation of a meme firsthand when I was at Otakon 2011, an anime convention (don’t judge me!). There were a lot of vendors outside of the convention trying to sell us food, water, and various knickknacks.  There was a particular vendor with a raspy voice, probably from smoking, trying to sell people “ice cold water” to people in a catchy rap using a megaphone.

Here’s what he rapped:

I found it pretty funny, but a lot of people found it hysterical. At the convention, people yelled “I got that ice cold water” and people would respond in turn “and it’s only one DOLLAR!”. After the convention, people really started to spread that around including a lot of “text, picture, text” pictures including this one:

What I find really funny is that they have a dubstep remixes of it, and some of them aren’t that bad.

Because of this meme, I feel more apart of the people that go to Otakon. I can respond to the call like everyone else, and they know I’ve witnessed this man in his moment of glory and enjoyed it like them. It may only be a small point of connection, but it helps me to feel more comfortable about being with all these strangers at the convention.

First Post!

Welcome to my blog. It feels a little world to troll myself in this post, but I felt the title is appropriate. I hope you enjoy my blog and interesting posts will come soon.
